  • The $2.50 Indian Head quarter Eagle gold coin is 18 mm in diameter, presents a reeded edge, has a total weight of 0.12094 troy ounces (or 4.18 grams), and has a face value of $2.50.
  • Contains a metal composition of 90% gold and 10% copper.
  • Minted from 1908 to 1915 and then again from 1925-1929, the $2.50 Indian Head quarter eagle is one of the shortest-lived series in United States numismatics, making it a rare and engaging collectors item.
  • Features the first Native American ever to appear on U.S. Coinage, since Caucasians dressed in Native American attire were previously used as models.
  • The obverse (front) design displays an Indian Chief wearing a full-feathered headdress with the word "Liberty" inscribed above his headband. A border of 13 stars encircle him with the date written underneath.

    Product Description

      Details

Selected by President Theodore Roosevelt, Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt broke from tradition and constructed a more contemporary design. This new design would set the $2.50 Indian Head apart from previously made raised relief coins, since they were the first (and only) U.S. Gold coins to use the technique known as "incuse" relief.

These new coins would have a design recessed into the metal giving them a sunken appearance on a flat plane. Therefore, these coins represent a truly unprecedented and rare piece of American coin history that had never been attempted before.
