    Details

Taking an interest in the design of currency during his term in office, President Roosevelt readily agreed to a new issue of the $5 gold piece. Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt proposed a new design that would break tradition. Previously having a raised design, Pratt recommended the new gold coin be "incuse" with a design that would be recessed into the metal rather than raised and have a sunken appearance.

The $5 Indian Head half eagle gold coins were also minted and distributed as currency before President Franklin Roosevelt required Americans to turn in their Gold coins to be melted into bars to help combat the Great Depression. The recall of Gold made these coins that were previously very common, a rare find. Combining this historical value and the rarity of the sunken-relief design, makes these coins a great way to add value and character to any coin collection.
